[How To] Use Swap Magic 3.6 With the Fat PS2 Tutorial

244 ratings | 47681 views
Before I had a slim PS2, I had a fat PS2, and that was the first console I used for modding! To help me get started in my younger years, I used what is called Swap Magic 3.6. It is a tool that allows you to play backed up game discs, and it can also allow you to boot UlaunchElf so you can install FMCB! Awesome! ------------------------------------------- *Links For the Video* Purchase swap magic: https://www.estarland.com/Playstation2.cat..product.17111.html ------------------------------------------- **Stay Connected With Our Videos** Project Phoenix Media: http://www.ProjectPhoenixMedia.com Follow Me On Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/MoNeYINPHX Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/vstpower Become friends with us: http://www.facebook.com/GDVideos ----------------------------------------------------------- Versatile Related Stuff: Blog: http://www.VersatileNinja.com Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/versatileninja ----------------------------------------------------------- Tutorial request form: www.tinyurl.com/tutrequest vstPower Steam Group: http://steamcommunity.com//groups/vstPower Copyright © 2014 Project Phoenix Media - All Rights Reserved Issues with video content? Too bad when I bought the swap magic pack years ago it didn't come with that thing used to open the door. You know anything I can use to open the door that won't damage the tray?
Project Phoenix Media (10 days ago)
You can use cardboard from a cereal box, or if you have an old gift card, there are swap magic lock templates online for you to trace and cut
Thomas Moriarty (2 months ago)
Hello where you able to play gunfighter 2 for ps2 I tried everything it’s a pal game
Project Phoenix Media (2 months ago)
Don't have it so can't comment for ntsc.
Thomas Moriarty (2 months ago)
How did you remove the front cover
Project Phoenix Media (2 months ago)
I did this 10 years ago but there is a PS logo on the front. Pry that off and I believe there is a screw I think? Then you can remove it.
Frellyouall (2 months ago)
"Back up"
Matt Mattius (3 months ago)
Could anyone help at all? I have a Japanese import copy of Elemental Gearbolt for the Sony PlayStation, I can make it run on my factory PAL PS1 system using the action replay and Spring method and it runs fine, but for some reason it runs in black and white, and it's hazy/ blurry. I can't be the cables/ connections as I can go from playing Crash Bandicoot perfectly, then to Elemental Gearbolt and it's always the same. Anyone know what's up?
Project Phoenix Media (3 months ago)
Is it because its NTSC and you are running it on PAL system? Is your Crash Bandicoot NTSC or PAL?
mo ka (4 months ago)
Can I use this with a USB instead of a backup disc
Project Phoenix Media (3 months ago)
If you have OPL 0.9.3 and higher with FMCB or FHDB
cowand chicken (4 months ago)
These were the days
Alex Camarena (5 months ago)
WHAT MODEL NUMBER IS THAT?
Project Phoenix Media (5 months ago)
This is the 30001 series.
noav snow (6 months ago)
hey just wondering do you have to do this every time you put in a disk from a different region
noav snow (6 months ago)
Project Phoenix Media oh damm my bad your right thank you so much
Project Phoenix Media (6 months ago)
That is a fat so it is compatible with FMCB!
noav snow (6 months ago)
shit it wont work for this one im guessing right
noav snow (6 months ago)
+Project Phoenix Media is this one alright the SCPH30001R
Project Phoenix Media (6 months ago)
Correct, FMCB is what you need, assuming your ps2 is not the scph-9xxxxx series.
Julian C (7 months ago)
Tried using the slide tool to grab the disc tray but it won’t come out. I keep sliding it to the right and it just won’t clip onto anything.
Project Phoenix Media (7 months ago)
Try pushing it in deeper, it will eventually latch onto the bottom of the drive latch. Or get FMCB and play from usb, smb, or internal hard drive.
CattaShin2749 (7 months ago)
How did you remove the external CD layer? The one with PS logo on it?!
Project Phoenix Media (7 months ago)
I don't remember exact process, I think I took a screw driver and popped off the ps logo, and there was a screw there to undo?
MaskedBroBot Dubs (9 months ago)
just ordered this off amazon today, was wondering if i could pop in a cheat disc after using swap magic and then inserting a japanese import
Project Phoenix Media (8 months ago)
It isn't I have a video showing how it works in the ps2 playlist
MaskedBroBot Dubs (9 months ago)
how difficult would that be?
Project Phoenix Media (9 months ago)
That I don't know, I only know how it works by using usb method with codebreaker modified
Professer 001 (10 months ago)
Can I play Japanese games example: kingdom hearts 2 final mix
Project Phoenix Media (10 months ago)
Sure, I play JPN games on NTSC PS2 and no issues.
Jamarius Walker (1 year ago)
nice now how to do this with a Japanese game
Project Phoenix Media (1 year ago)
If you can get your hands on FMCB and compatible ps2, you can play JPN games. I have done it before on my USA console
idorocks23 Gaming (1 year ago)
Could you do a video on how to take the DVD cover off?
SuperDarkLord7 (1 year ago)
Is there an easier way to do this with the Sony Bravia ps2 system as I don’t want to ruin it by taking it apart
King of Spain 578 (1 year ago)
Can I use this to play the ps2 Berserk game? I have a "fat" ps2, by the way.
Miles Tails Prower (1 year ago)
Can i play burned games on DVD with CD version of swap magic?
Marius Fjørtoft (1 year ago)
Heya, I was wondering if this would work on a PAL ps2 system to play ps1 and ps2 games bought in the US? Merry Christmas, btw.
Project Phoenix Media (1 year ago)
Hmm, with popstarter and opl sure, BUT the games maybe off center or don't play right because of the 50hz vs 60 hz. Just saying.
Zelos Wilder (1 year ago)
I was hoping to play the Japanese version of Tales of Symphonia for the PS2, so I wouldn't need a PS3, would that work?
Zelos Wilder (1 year ago)
I keep hearing I need to burn disks and other weird stuff, can I just buy a game and use it, or do I need to change the disk or something?
Project Phoenix Media (1 year ago)
If you get FMCB and you have compatible model, then yes. I play JPN NTSC games on my US PS2 if that helps.
Hota MC (1 year ago)
I need free mcboot?
Project Phoenix Media (1 year ago)
Or modchip or swap magic, these days most people use free mcboot, but the more interesting part is what tools you are going to use to make free mcboot
Kalosur (1 year ago)
Risks?
Kalosur (1 year ago)
Project Phoenix Media thank you so much!
Project Phoenix Media (1 year ago)
These days suggest you get a fmcb memory card or network adapter with hard drive and install FHDB, which is a fmcb hard drive version. Basically, swap magic not needed and we can do soft method now.
Jean Rivera (1 year ago)
That's it and burn a game and it work
Project Phoenix Media (1 year ago)
If you have modchip or swap magic like this video did, then yes. Otherwise, get FMCB and play games with OPL.
Fast Pro (1 year ago)
Ask person that made disc swap magic to Do a disc swap magic for Xbox one and PS3 and PS4 .So we can play backup game. With out open. you have installed game before play them there must be away doing it.
Project Phoenix Media (1 year ago)
PS3 need jailbreak thru e3 flasher. Xbox one and PS4 don't have anything good right now, maybe not for years if that.
haha (1 year ago)
Thanks! I just ordered a swap magic disc and wanted to know how to use it. This was really helpful.
Kira Queen (1 year ago)
insert very really creative name did it work
haha (1 year ago)
And i literally just took out the front of the disc slot
haha (1 year ago)
I got it on Amazon and 77% five star rating so i think I'm safe
Project Phoenix Media (1 year ago)
Great, just make sure it's a legit swap magic, sounds like it is.
Matt Brewster (1 year ago)
I just brought a fat ps2 NTSC and want to play old legit ps1 PAL games I have swap magic 3.8 HOW DO I DO IT !! HELP PLEASE
Project Phoenix Media (1 year ago)
Look into popstarter is what you want, but PAL games on NTSC console/tv sounds like trouble...
ANARCHY 91 (1 year ago)
I used to play PS1 game and PS2 games on PS2 Slim model 7000
niquolas561 (2 years ago)
Will it not work just by hitting the eject button or so I have to mess up the tray and have that slider tool? Only part that confuses me.
niquolas561 (1 year ago)
Project Phoenix Media thank you
Project Phoenix Media (1 year ago)
You need slider tool with swap magic. Or get a hold of FMCB and don't worry about this and play games from smb or usb.
Gameboy Graff (2 years ago)
Could somebody tell me how to take the DVD cover off?
Project Phoenix Media (2 years ago)
I never took apart disc tray before, should be other screws I would think so you can get into the interior.
Gameboy Graff (2 years ago)
Project Phoenix Media I got it off but now my disc tray won't open
Project Phoenix Media (2 years ago)
The easiest way is flip the PS2 upside down, take out all the screws, and carefully pry open the top of the fat ps2 casing.
Spicy Puffin (2 years ago)
Does this work for japanese games? Because i plan on getting the berserk ps2 game. Also thanks for this because i was worried that i needed to get the ps2 slim.
Mariana Strife (1 year ago)
Yes it does. I tested the Berserk PS2 game on my PAL fat PS2 :)
Project Phoenix Media (2 years ago)
I run that game from usb on my ntsc console, no issues. Game on!
KQD 1 (2 years ago)
I have magic swap 3.8. everytime I swap the magic swap for a burned game and boot it up. it send me to the normal boot up and says please enter a ps2 disc. any suggestions?
Project Phoenix Media (2 years ago)
Can you install FMCB instead, and then try loading games via OPL instead and see if get better results.
LIL RIZZ (2 years ago)
My ps2 is fucked up the same way yours is at the front lmao
Project Phoenix Media (2 years ago)
Glad to know I'm not the only one!
Sire Sane (2 years ago)
Can I play burned ps1 games if I use the swap magic and do I have to insert the swap magic disc in everytime before I play the games, or do I have to use it only once to play burned games with it?
Project Phoenix Media (2 years ago)
PS1 games look into popstarter or psxlauncher method, both are show cased in my ps2 playlist.
Darius Winters (2 years ago)
I want to play japanese PS1 games on the fat PS2 (both original and burnt). Would i be able to play these by using Swap Magic? Were can i find SWAP magic and that weird tool you have?
Matt Mattius (3 months ago)
Could anyone help at all? I have a Japanese import copy of Elemental Gearbolt for the Sony PlayStation, I can make it run on my factory PAL PS1 system using the action replay and Spring method and it runs fine, but for some reason it runs in black and white, and it's hazy/ blurry. I can't be the cables/ connections as I can go from playing Crash Bandicoot perfectly, then to Elemental Gearbolt and it's always the same. Anyone know what's up?
Project Phoenix Media (2 years ago)
The swap magic tool is only for PS2 games. If you find a way to get FMCB for your ps2, you can use popstarter to play your PS1 games via usb, should help against region lock.
Capitaine Albatar (2 years ago)
I live in Europe and I want to play american games, will Swap Magic 3.6 help me ?
Kira Queen (1 year ago)
Project Phoenix Media whats does ntsc mean?
Project Phoenix Media (2 years ago)
Yes as it has a PAL mode and NTSC mode, but if you play NTSC games on PAL console and PAL tv, the game will be off centered, maybe black and white or screen rolling.
ilcavalieremascarato (2 years ago)
sei un coglione
Project Phoenix Media (2 years ago)
Can't, you got to get the game developers to change their game...
KillButt (2 years ago)
So if I just bought SwapMagic I could use it to play a EU PS2 game on my NA PS2, correct? I don't need to do any sort of modding to my PS2? And by EU PS2 game I mean the actual game, not a backup
Gameboy Graff (2 years ago)
could you make a video showing that, because i want to get a swap magic to play naruto shippuden ultimate ninja 5 pal verison
Project Phoenix Media (2 years ago)
Careful, playing PAL games on NTSC tvs don't play well, don't be surprised if the game is off centered or graphics are messed up.
ricky martinez (2 years ago)
donde consigo esa plaquita para abrir ?
shadowfan10001 (2 years ago)
so just two questions so did you just burn a normal blank DVD disc or was it a special one also do i need to pull off the cover off the ps2 and use the disc like that
Kira Queen (1 year ago)
Tyler Allen have you found it?
Project Phoenix Media (2 years ago)
Yes but you have to remember, I have swap magic which is impossible to find these days. If you can, I suggest you get FMCB and play games from usb or from ethernet.
keysord11 (2 years ago)
what kind of disc do you use cause i used a DVD-R and still it didn't work
keysord11 (2 years ago)
+Project Phoenix Media thanks but i got it to work i just didn't slide it back to the left to lock it back so thats why it didnt work
Project Phoenix Media (2 years ago)
DVD+R for ps2 slim, dvd-r for fat.
ジョネーJonét (3 years ago)
Why do you need a slide tool? You can't open it normally for this to work?
Project Phoenix Media (3 years ago)
+rodthetruth Best solution is get your hands on FMCB and you can play the game via internal hard drive or usb or over the network. Doesn't use the laser at all. I do sell FMCB memory cards for USA if interested, email me at vstpower at gmail dot com for more details.
rodthetruth (3 years ago)
+Project Phoenix Media Hi good sir. I enjoyed your video because I just recently got interested in the whole process. You see, I've always wanted to play Naruto Ultimate ninja 5, but it was unfortunately never released in North America and was restricted to Europe only. I recently purchased it and would love to play it, but I was hoping to find a much safer alternative (if there is such a thing) I own a fat ps2 that I have had for a little over 15 years, so I'd appreciate a better solution to avoid any damage to it or its laser.
ジョネーJonét (3 years ago)
thx
Project Phoenix Media (3 years ago)
+Jonét Harry For the fat ps2 and you have swap magic, yes. If you somehow get your hands on a fmcb memory card, no swapping needed.
ジョネーJonét (3 years ago)
So you NEED to do that?
マーク (3 years ago)
Can I play Japanese import games on a PAL European PS2 system via Swap Magic 3.8 and the slide tool?
Project Phoenix Media (3 years ago)
+Make K. Not sure, JPN games are NTSC so it maybe off centered when you play on PAL console.
wth12 (3 years ago)
Do you need to patch .iso before burn to play with SwapMagic.elf, I know that you not have to do that with swapmagic cd, but with .elf?..
Project Phoenix Media (3 years ago)
+Sanchee Where did you get this swapmagic.elf file from? You don't have the legit swap magic silver disc?
wth12 (3 years ago)
+Project Phoenix Media I tried this, sm.elf starts good but I just got black screen or it takes me to browser screen after I click normal run and default, I tried two esr patched games...
Project Phoenix Media (3 years ago)
+Sanchee No you do not.
Joshua Fernandez (3 years ago)
One thing can i put the Magic Swap just like a putting a game or disk into the Cd Rom
Project Phoenix Media (3 years ago)
+Joshua Fernandez Yes like normal
Joshua Fernandez (3 years ago)
Like simple or normal
You Wish (3 years ago)
Any idea if I can use this to play legit import games? I have a PAL system want to play US NTSC games. Obviously I'd buy the PAL swap magic and my tv supports 60hz NTSC playback, so woud it work for this? or is only for *cough* backup games?
Kalosur (1 year ago)
Project Phoenix Media is there any risk?
Project Phoenix Media (3 years ago)
+You Wish It will work for both...assuming you can find legit copy of swap magic.
Jeremiah (3 years ago)
and that sega dreamcast looks good you should get shenmue for it
Jeremiah (3 years ago)
will swap magic work with the Japanese game bleach blade battlers 2
Project Phoenix Media (3 years ago)
+raven still Yes, see the ps2 playlist. Most gamers use opl
ray ray (3 years ago)
+Project Phoenix Media Can you play ps2 games on the ps2 over usb?
Project Phoenix Media (3 years ago)
+Jeremiah Atkins It is just like in this video, but pretend I have a copy of that game instead. These days I dont use swap magic anymore, play from usb or network to save the ps2 laser.
Jeremiah (3 years ago)
+Project Phoenix Media could you please do a video of you playing bleach blade battlers 2 on your ps2 using swap magic to show me so I'll know how to do it
Project Phoenix Media (3 years ago)
+Jeremiah Atkins Yes, it is NTSC
Brian Frausto (3 years ago)
will swap magic still work if you have a special control for a certain game?
Project Phoenix Media (3 years ago)
+Brian Frausto Yes, assuming you have legit copy of swap magic which is hard to find these days.
GENO4567 (3 years ago)
Hy will Japan imports work i really wanna play Gregory horror show
Project Phoenix Media (3 years ago)
+GENO4567 Only if you have NTSC console.
Tony Montana (3 years ago)
Hello, his works swap magic 3.6 or 3.8 with Hokuto no Ken Fighting (Version Japanese - I buy the game) On a PS2 FAT PAL? thanks
MightyXMarc ! (3 years ago)
Can I use a burned copy of swap magic 3.8? I burned a copy using DVD-R discs and my ps2 couldn't read it.
Project Phoenix Media (3 years ago)
+MightyXMarc ! Sorry, burned copies don't work. Try this method: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kp1uvnN-2z8
Ivan Ribeiro (3 years ago)
Using Swap Magic 3.8 can damage the PS2??
Project Phoenix Media (3 years ago)
+Joshua Fernandez It depends...long term if you play all the time every day, it will fail the laser one day.
Joshua Fernandez (3 years ago)
+Project Phoenix Media What about you said u use Usb Games On Ps2 to save the laser?? Can it really Damage the ps2 laser when i use Magic3?
Ivan Ribeiro (3 years ago)
Thanks
Project Phoenix Media (3 years ago)
+Ivan Ribeiro No it will not.
MrGetNow (4 years ago)
Nice vid
Project Phoenix Media (4 years ago)
+MrGETNOW - PS3 Modder Thank you.
Jonathan Lee (4 years ago)
Couldn't you just keep the PS2 on and load the Swap Magic disc as normal and then switch them out after? Why did you have to use the slide tool to put the Swag Magic in?
Versatile (4 years ago)
+Jon L see the new 007 video, less complex
Jonathan Lee (4 years ago)
Oh, Swap Magic is much more complicated than I thought. Thanks for the explanation.
Project Phoenix Media (4 years ago)
If you do not use the slide tool, the PS2 will know that your disc tray has been opened and closed. We do not want to do that. The way swap magic works is it pauses the laser and the motor, then you do the swap with your backup. If you used swap magic, and ejected the disc tray, and then insert your backed up game without doing the whole slide tool process, the PS2 will see the game as an invalid PS2 disc. I think what happens is when you open the disc tray, the PS2 refreshes its TOC to the invalid disc, not the proper swap magic disc. Notice that the swap magic disc is silver pressed, this is why you cannot download it and burn it. Even if you were to somehow burn a copy of swap magic, the PS2 will see it as an invalid disc.
Jarvis (4 years ago)
swap magig or matrix?
Versatile (4 years ago)
Depends on your budget
Suika Ibuki (4 years ago)
or use an emulator
Versatile (4 years ago)
+Philip Pfützner to be fair even i5 or i7 computers can still crawl when emulating certain ps2 games. Nothing is perfect
Philip Pfützner (4 years ago)
You could do that, but PS2 Emulators need really powerful PCs. Also some games won't even load on Emulators.
specialformula14 (4 years ago)
great vid.. but my problem is buring the games correctly ... i have tried slow speed and music always skips.. all sorts of brands.. verbatim. and different drives..   any suggestions?
Versatile (4 years ago)
Burn 4 or 6x. Laser could be picky too.
Naruto Uzumaki (4 years ago)
When are you gonna do the agent under fire tutorial?
Project Phoenix Media (4 years ago)
+ShadowReaper Tutorial will be live soon tonight. Got it working on first try. Great solution for gamer on a budget!
AlphaMax (4 years ago)
I did that trick on my ps2 slim silver edition. Works great.
Versatile (4 years ago)
I'll be looking into that tomorrow. First I have to understand the process, and then I got to play the game to level 2 also..... :(
